Sometimes the simplest techniques are the best… Sometimes the simplest techniques are the best… In this case using the mobile handhold that is the humble rucksack shoulder strap. Clients can hold onto the instructor’s or vice versa (waist belts and chest straps done up do help) Multiple options are available: ➡️ I can hold client’s shoulder strap for physical safety ‘support’ (rare) or hold their strap for the more likely psychological safety ‘support’. ➡️ Clients hold on to my rucksack strap to aid their movement technique or performance. This particular technique I use to good effect during gorge scrambles or on general boulder/hill terrain (enables everyone to maintain appropriate forward momentum). ➡️ A climbing sling can be ‘larks-footed’ through both shoulder straps and used a bit like a supportive chest harness ( a recognised technique; however I have never used this in nearly 30 mountain years…) #SupportSensationCirculation all here: ✅ Support - both physical and psychological ✅ Sensation of session success and moving ‘forward’ ✅ Circulation maintained through movement in the mountains

Cold, wet, windy weather and environments can negatively impact the sensation we experience as instructors and outdoor leaders. However there are a number of products available on hand to help (excuse the pun). 👍 For me one of them is a #goclimbon bar. ✅ It does not soften the skin too much (thereby maintaining enough skin toughness for the next day) ✅ The wax can be scraped off by a finger nail and packed into cracks for magical overnight repairs 🪄 ✅ Bars last a seriously long time ❌ Just do not leave them on the car dash in the sun - eventually the stuff will melt and is only accessible through scraping off the bottom of the tin! ✅ And you are eventually left with a small, sturdy tin that is great for re-using around the house or on the hill! #SupportSensationCirculation
Not everything has to be heard… Loud music, chat Not everything has to be heard… Loud music, chatter, excited groups, impact drivers for route setting etc. All can add to the distraction of any person at a wall and especially people who require a quieter, more calming atmosphere to aid their performance. ✅ Ask for the tunes to be turned down or for certain speakers to be un-plugged ✅ Utilise quieter times of the day ✅ Chat with other instructors and coaches to identify quieter parts of the wall for the session ✅ Provide options for clients regarding auditory reduction with foam or gel ear plugs or ear defenders ✅ Get the management onside regarding options and opportunities to support climbers (how about an Earthly Edge inclusive climbing training course? 😉) Maintaining appropriate levels of sensation to support climbers and aid participation (participation ensures the circulation of important positive chemicals around the body). #SupportSensationCirculation all right there! 👍
Even the most basic of tasks can take on a whole n Even the most basic of tasks can take on a whole new level of complexity with only a couple of changes. In this case working with someone who was going for their first hill walk whilst also now needing regular toilet stops. By asking openly and with empathy we forged a partnership where: ➡️ An appropriate ‘private’ route for the day was walked (lots of twists, turns, boulders and trees) ➡️ Options that they could choose and explore for their first time ‘toileting’ outdoors (cat hole or hand held poo bag or commode stand with poo bag). ➡️ Spare clothing, shelter ( #aiguillealpine ), ‘cleaning’ kit and a secret signal if they were required. ➡️ Me with a good size rucksack carrying the spare kit and commode stand inside it; therefore everything just looked like a ‘typical’ hill day. ✅ #SupportSensationCirculation along with independence, choice, ability and control. All enabled and ensured for a wonderful hill day above Coniston.

Why do we accept this!!! 😡 Buy and use size specific helmets such as this smaller sized #petzl_offical Piccachoo. Often seen as a child’s only helmet but is able to be fitted correctly on a very much adult Dave H. in the photo! ✅ Bright colours + hard shelled and therefore robust (supports your business financially!) ✅ Light and comfortable - essential for youngsters ( therefore ensuring a positive activity sensation ) ✅ Piccachoo is multi-activity rated for climbing, caving and cycling (circulation of positive chemicals by ensuring participation in multiple activities) Ensure #SupportSensationCirculation as best as possible by having a range of helmets on offer for clients.
