It’s called mixed/dry tool climbing and many winter climbs in Britain have moves that involve using ice tools in frozen cracks or on snow covered rock. To train for such climbing (without actually climbing said winter routes!) you can either train indoors using Schmoolz tools (a blog on these interesting wooden tools to follow soon) or visit dedicated quarries that have been developed specifically for use with ice tools (the scarring that they produce is rightly not acceptable on established summer rock routes). The photo is of Jason pulling some low moves on a bottom rope at ‘The Works’ quarry. A great spot for a wet day and for a full work out pulling some amazing moves!
